Evangeline is a theater arts professional in her late 20s. She contacted me last December for styling advice in preparation for an interview for a faculty position at a prestigious southern university. She had already planned her interview outfit but had begun to have second thoughts. She was looking for an unbiased expert to offer her an honest opinion and any necessary styling advice.
Looking to Strike the Right Note
Because of her young age, Evangeline was worried about appearing too youthful, but she also wanted to make sure she didn’t look too corporate or drab. She was looking to strike an appropriate balance between creativity and professionalism for her interview ensemble.
After my phone consultation with Evangeline, we decided to do some targeted virtual styling work together. She emailed photos of a few proposed outfits and I responded with my feedback. Her suggested looks either skewed too young or they included black garments, which she felt looked too corporate or cliché for her industry.
My Styling Advice – Shoe and Color Changes
The main issue I saw with Evangeline’s outfit possibilities surrounded her shoe choices. The shoes she was wearing were far too heavy and drew the eye to her feet instead of toward her lovely face. I suggested she find some nude colored pumps to elongate her legs and keep her interviewers’ attention on her face and eyes. I sent her a variety of links for shoes she could purchase at local stores within her price range. Because she is a blonde with fair skin tone, I also suggested she stick to lighter clothing colors with perhaps a pop of bright color in her blouse to add visual interest to her outfit.
The Amazing Finished Results!
Evangeline took my advice and purchased a light grey suit, fuchsia blouse, and nude shoes. In this fabulous outfit and with her stellar background and vibrant personality, she got the job! See below for her initial proposed outfit and the final interview look. Doesn’t she look great?
A Happy Virtual Client
Shortly after Evangeline started her new job, she sent me a thank you note and testimonial for our work together. Here is an excerpt of what she wrote (see the full text on my Testimonials Page):
“Debbie did not disappoint. Not only did she talk me through the basics, but she instilled within me the confidence I needed to rock the outfit and the interview, and most importantly, LAND THE JOB! She offered practical and easy-to-follow advice I had never even realized was important, like, “the darkest thing on your body is what will draw the eye,” so maybe it’s not a good idea to wear black stockings if I don’t want my legs to be the most prominent thing.”
“She helped me select much more professional and elegant shoes, and she talked me through how to make my impression subtly yet firmly. Debbie was able to translate my flowery descriptive SoCal ideas of what I wanted my outfit to say into actual wardrobe pieces. And, I was able to do it all within my budget, which was to stay under $200!”
